Dutchess? Witch? Madame?

I started out with the intention of creating a witch for the Grapevine Hollow Launch scheduled for Friday the 14th.

I chose a pattern from one of my favorite designers; Pam Gracia of Soft in the Head. Speaking of heads, this witch has a head full of hair. Beautiful, soft and wiry curls from clean sheep's wool that was gifted to me. I have to confess, I did try to highlight the hair with a little green. It didn't work for me, so I tore it out and started over, and felted it in layers, to giver her a full look. Much Better.

Her apron is a scented cheesecloth from Prim Hearts Hollow, my friend Lorey from NEPG. This is the ultimate cheesecloth. The yummy smell is to die for. I can't wait to get me some more of this wonderful stuff!

As usual, my projects take on a personality of their own. Pam, if you read this, I try my darndest to follow your patterns, and when I see signs that I'm way off base, I just give myself license to go with the flow, rather than give up. I NEVER can predict the outcome, and it is just as much a surprise to me.

The hat was originally an orange plaid wool. It was too floppy, so I applied some fabric stiffener. It left residue that looked awful.
So I painted the hat black, and that took forever to dry. I literally suspended a dryer over it and let it run. I didn't feel like dealing with the oven, and I worked on it mostly at night, so sunshine was out of the question.

Today I went shopping on my lunch hour and found this ole crow. The minute I spotted him, I just KNEW he was the very thing missing from my witch. (I'm going back tomorrow for more!!!! ) This crow is like a pet parrot. Travels everywhere right on her shoulder.
I had this little "ditty" bag from some mica flakes I ordered a while back. I thought it would make the perfect pouch for some Sweet Annie. It has a little label that reads "needfuls".

Every witch has a toad or frog of some sort. This little guy looks like he just adores her, and he's hanging on for dear life. He's really not as slimey as he looks.

I couldn't come up with a crystal ball, but I did come up with a crystal orb!! I absolutely LOVE crystals. I think it added the right magical element.

So, I need to come up with a name. I'm thinking Dutchess of Doom, Dutchess of Dreams... Madame of Misery....???? I don't know, I guess maybe tomorrow morning I will be fresh, so maybe I should just sleep on it. Then I can make a hang tag, and she will be complete......maybe I will make the launch after all.

As I wrote this post tonight, I was dealing with a heavy heart. Out of the clear blue, my cousin (who works with me) received a call that she should meet her husband at the hospital. Her Father-in-law just had a heart attack. An hour and half later, she called to tell me he had passed on......

Last weekend she had invited me to her Labor Day party, and he was there. I was feeling overwhelmed, and not myself, and chose to stay home. If I could have that weekend back, I would have gone, because I would have said a kind word, or shared a joke or two. Now my heart is heavy with regret and sadness for the kids that just lost their grandfather, for the daughters and son that lost their dad, for the wife that just lost her best friend.

It's ironic that just this week a co-worker just returning from a jog was rushed to the hospital after suffering a heart attack. He spent 2 nights in the hospital, and was at work TODAY. We celebrated his return. He was smiling ear to ear from all the attention he received, feeling very special. Before the day was over, we are grieving for one not so lucky.

So my friends, the message here is hug your loved ones TODAY, say "I love you" one more time, and make time for your friends and family as much as you can. Write that letter you have been putting off. Life is too short and too delicate, and full of reasons to have NO REGRETS. Your priorities should always be with your loved ones. You don't always get a second chance. My dad went into surgery, and I never had the chance to say I love you one more time.

My deepest condolences to the Bragdon family. I am so sorry for your loss.
